What is Acupuncture and How Does It Work?

Acupuncture is the central treatment modality of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Based on the philosophy that Qi is the life-giving energy that flows through the body along pathways called Meridians, and that blockages or imbalances in Qi are what cause illness, the acupuncturist seeks to positively influence this flow to create and maintain health.

You might think of the Meridians as flowing rivers, or electrical conduits, which send energy and nourishment to all the organ systems. There are hundreds of "points" in the body where the Meridians intersect, or where Qi is very concentrated. The smooth flow of Qi along the Meridians can be disrupted or blocked due to many reasons, such as stress, trauma, toxins, poor diet, lack of rest, abuse - whether physical or emotional, etc.. A healthy body can usually restore the flow on its own, but if the disruption continues, or the body is in a weakened state, then illness can result. The acupuncturist places very fine, sterile needles, deeply stimulating the chosen points in order to activate the Qi and get it moving again, which in turn promotes the body's natural ability to heal and balance itself.

Studies have shown that acupuncture helps to regulate the nervous system, aiding the activity of pain-killing biochemicals such as endorphins. It strengthens and balances the immune system, and may act upon the release of neurotransmitters and neurohormones, thus, affecting the parts of the central nervous system related to sensation and involuntary body functions, such as immune reactions and processes that regulate blood pressure, blood flow, and body temperature.
